Chrysler's first ever electric vehicle is scheduled to be launched in 2010, with three more EV's in production by 2013.

Chrysler 200c EV

At this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the American automaker showed the public updated versions of three electric powered vehicles that were first announced several months back--including a Lotus-esque Dodge sports car (now called the Circuit), a Chrysler Town & Country EV and a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV. A new model was shown as well--the Jeep Patriot EV.

Chrysler says that at least one of the vehicles displayed would be produced for North American markets in 2010.

"Chrysler's broad portfolio of electric vehicle prototypes clearly demonstrates that we are well on our way to bringing electric vehicles to our consumers' garages," said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President - Product Development, Chrysler LLC. "With our ENVI-powered vehicles, Chrysler's strategy is to deliver customers a wide array of electric vehicles that provide an environmentally friendly, clean, quiet and responsible driving experience."

The range-extended electric drive system found in the Patriot, Town and Country and Wrangler enable totally electric driving within a certain range--after which the on-board gas engine kicks in to recharge the batteries. The Dodge Circuit is solely electrical, and has a range of up to 320 kilometers.

The Chrysler 200C EV is a smart-looking sedan featuring a powertrain that includes a 74-hp electric motor with a battery pack, good for a 64-km range, and a small gasoline regenerative engine that bumps the car's range to 644 km. No specific details on the engine have been announced for the moment, but peak power is estimated at 298 horses.

Other specs include rear-wheel drive, an all-independent suspension and 20-inch wheels. The 4-passenger 200C rides on a 2,948-mm wheelbase and is 4,879-mm long.

Inside, the 200C EV's instrument panel emphasizes simplicity and features a multimedia interface with a touch screen that is used to control just about every function. The four individual seats are heated and cooled, and a next-generation version of the UConnect hands-free system is also included.

One thing's certain--this is going to be technology to watch in the coming years.

Reconsidered from the roof down

For the first time in Wrangler history, its hardtop is available in the exterior body colour for a more premium look. As for the softtop, its rear window is 152 mm wider to see more of what you've left in the dust.

Smarter surroundings

Wrangler was Four Wheeler Magazine's 4X4 of the last decade because of its on-road handling and off-road capability. This decade we've added modern styling and a more ergonomic approach to adventure. You'll notice the soft-touch finishings, redesigned gauge panel, three-spoked steering wheel and premium accents right away; along with a true armrest, relocated door handles, a new "streamlined" centre stack with better access, and more functionality in the rear cargo area. What you might not immediately see are the subtle homages to our history. Look for them behind the rear view mirror and on the inside of the door.

The most awarded Ram truck ever

Aerodynamic

All that honesty helped carve one of the lowest drag coefficient of any truck in its class:

  • Ram's mirrors alone represent an entire chapter of exhaustive aerodynamic research and testing
  • The bold hood bulge ends in a cowling at the windshield, covering the wipers and protecting them from drag
  • Windshield side mouldings channel rain water onto the roof instead of side windows where it can interfere with visibility
  • The shape of the leading edge of the windshield frame was fine-tuned to minimize wind noise
  • We even tuned the tailgate for improved aerodynamics
  • Joints were made sound, seals tight, and airflow resourceful - all contributing to fuel economy and one of the most efficient Noise, Vibration and Harshness control systems ever built
